These days it is common for many young people to need that extra bit of help when deciding what to do with their lives. As such, the careers advice industry has dramatically expanded in recent years and many students are looking to pursue courses in this particular field.

Careers prospects

The majority of students who have studied this course attempt to pursue careers as careers advisors, taking responsibility for providing information, advice and guidance to help young people make realistic choices about their education and training. This includes conducting interviews, identifying gaps in people’s skill sets – and providing solutions – as well as giving advice on how to write strong CVs.

Studying Career Advice

There are a number of courses available to those wishing to study a course in careers advice. If you’re wishing to study at undergraduate level, you should have a minimum of 3 A-levels and the course will last a minimum of 3 years.

However, if you already have an undergraduate degree, there is always the option to study this subject at postgraduate level. A postgraduate course will last a minimum of a year, although some courses will be longer. If you wish, there is also the option to study on a part-time basis.

If you’re a non-native speaker of English, then don’t worry! A university will still give your application the same consideration, but you will be expected to sit an IELTS test and score a minimum of 6.0-6.5.

Where to study?

The impact your university location will have upon your experience will be two-fold. Primarily it will impact upon the area you live, so make sure to attend university open days and investigate the local area. However, for a vocational course such as a teaching, the location can also impact your future prospects within the jobs market. You should try and find a location which will not only make you happy, but also provide you with a wide range of experiences and job opportunities once you graduate.

Of course fees and academic grades should also come into consideration when deciding where to study. A teaching course is fiercely competitive, so it is important that you look have the minimum grades required in order to study, as well as the relevant work experience. Similarly, it is also important that you budget how you will pay your way. If you are struggling with fees or are still applying for funding, there are a number of bursaries and scholarships available for students.
