Psychology

Psychology is the discipline which involves the scientific study of mental behaviours, explaining not only what we do and how we behave, but also examining the thought process and reasoning behind our actions. From perceptive thought, cognitive recognition and interpersonal relationships, psychological theories and information is often used to solve problems in a wide sphere of human activity.

The word ‘psychology’ can be translated to mean the ‘study of the soul’ and is derived from the Latin word “psychologia” which was first used in the late 15th – early 16th Century by Marlo Marulic. This days, there are a wide range of theories explored within the discipline from functionalism, psychoanalysis and cognitivism, all of which are topics covered in undergraduate and graduate study programmes.

Is this the course for me?

Are you passionate about understanding people? DO you have an interest in knowing why behave in the way that we do? If so, then psychology may be the perfect course for you.

However, as a course psychology requires candidates to not only be passionate about the subject matter, but also to have strong analytical skills, applying and interpreting a number of psychological theories to real-life case studies.

Students who thrive during this course of study will also have an interest in conducting their own private study outside of their contact hours and have a hard-working, self motivated attitude.

Career prospects

Most individuals who take graduate or undergraduate courses in psychology do so with a view to pursuing a career in counselling or a similar field. From roles such as clinical psychologist to occupational psychologist, there are a number of career paths available to graduates with strong degrees, within both the public and private sectors.

Similarly, entering the law enforcement field is also a career option for some individuals who have studied psychology. Forensic psychologists are often required within the police force to understand the minds of those behind criminal activities, and they often assist with the solving of crimes.

However, those with degrees in psychology are often sought after candidates for a wide range of professions that don’t necessarily apply to the field of study as a result of their analytical skills and their experience understanding people and their behaviour. From retail management and human resources roles to social work and care roles, the careers options for psychology graduates are endless.
