Special Education

Special education refers to the teaching of individuals who have specialist educational needs and requires teachers to have individually planned and systematically mentor the aranerment of teaching procedures and adapted equipment. The special education industry is particularly interesting in the UK as while there are a number of specialised educational facilities, many mainstream academic establishments have facilities ro accommodate those with specialist education requirements.

Are you passionate about teaching? Does the human process and the different ways of processing information fascinate you? If so, then studying a course in special Education may be the ideal course of study for you.

However, it is also important for potential students to be hard working with strong analytical and interpretive skills as students will be learning cognitive theories and teaching techniques as well as being expected to attend lectures as well as conducting critical research in their own spare time.

As part of the course, students will also be expected to take part in supervised work placements with children and adults who have specialised educational needs. Students who are successful in these placements will not only have a strong knowledge of the course content, but will also patient and demonstrate their ability to empathise with students.

Careers prospects

A high portion of students who study special education fin jobs within this particular sector as it is a very specialised field of study. Whether working as a teacher within specialised educational establishments or as a special education support worker for those with special education needs within mainstream schools, there are a number of opportunities available. The average starting salary for a teacher in the UK is £21,588 per year, but those specialising in special education may be entitled to an additional allowance of £2001. However, those who do not wish to teach may also pursue careers as a youth worker promoting the personal, educations and social development of young people and many may even specialise in youth work with those who have behavioural or educational difficulties. Similarly, those with educational experience may also pursue careers within the social care sector, working in residential care homes or working to support families that care for those with special educational requirements.

Studying Special Educational Education

Most universities require students to demonstrate their passion for the discipline as well as their academic potential. Although previous qualifications in subjects such as English or psychology are beneficial , previous work experience working with children who have special educational requirements will really strengthen your application.

Undergraduate degrees require students to have 3 A-levels and most post-graduate courses will accept applicants with 2:1 qualifications in related subjects.

This particular course of study can be studied at both undergraduate and post-graduate level. The length of your course will very much depend upon where you decide to study. An undergraduate programme will last a minimum of 3 -4 years whereas a post-graduate qualification such as a PGCE will take a year to complete, although part-time options may available to study.

If you’re a non-native speaker of English, but are looking to study this particular programme, then don’t worry! If you meet the entry requirements, a University will still accept your application on the provision that you are able to score a minimum of 6.0 – 6.5 on an IELTS test.

Where to study?

Most Universities have very specific requirements for potential students. Most establishments will specify that applicants have specific A-level grades for undergraduate courses or a 2:1 degree for any post-graduate qualification. Before you decide on which course you should like to study, make sure that you meet the entry requirements. If you just fall short of meeting these requirements, contact the university and see if, on occasion they will make an exception.

Of course it is also important to choose somewhere that will make you happy for the duration of your course, particularly if you’re opting to live away from home. There is no denying that your qualification will end up costing you a lot of money. It is important that you get the most out of your time as a student and that living in the local area as well as paying fees is within your budget.

When you are applying to study on a special education course, it is important not only to look at the module options available to you, but also the practical hands-on experience that your University will allow you to gain during your studies.? Many establishments will cultivate relationships with teaching hospitals and special education schools that will not only provide students with strong practical experiences, but will also allow for a diverse range of career opportunities.
