Telecommunications

Of all the sciences, telecommunication is a relatively new degree programme which concerns itself with the science of transmitting data and information through the use of electromagnetic waves. Although a recent form of communication (the first telegraph wasn’t invented until 1839) the telecommunication industry is one that has not only dramatically expanded throughout the 2oth and 21st centuries, but has also become the back bone of modern society.

Is this the course for me?

Are you passionate about telecommunication? Do you have a natural flair for physics? Are you looking to pursue a career within this particular sector? If this is the case, then a course in telecommunication may be the perfect programme of study for you.

However, while an individual studying on this particular course should be passionate about the subject matter, it is also important that students are capable to individual study as understanding of the course content will be assessed not only through written assignments, but also through the completion of individual practical project work.

As such it is vital that students are also capable to learning with a more vocational approach to study. Those with all of these qualities as well as a hard-work ethic will be the most likely to successfully complete the course with strong grades.

Careers prospects

There are a number of roles available to graduates with a qualification in telecommunication. Many students find work within the engineering sector as a network administration engineer installing and maintaining communications between companies, an applications engineer taking responsibility for the co-ordination and installation of industrial equipment, or as a technical communications engineer. Starting salaries in this particular field of study average at £22,000 to £27,000 per year. This will however, depending upon geographic location and salary is likely to increase in proportion to your experience.

Similarly, there are also a number of research positions available, particularly within the telecommunications industry. Telecommunications researchers develop the knowledge and capabilities of mobile, cable and satellite technology. Typical starting salaries within this field of study equates to approximately £29,000 per year in the UK.

However, there is also a number of alternative careers for graduates in this particular field of study. Many students pursue careers in journalism, finance, IT and even fields such as HR. There is also the option for further study for those looking to change sectors completely and switch to careers in law and higher education.

Studying Telecommunications

If you’re wishing to study at a prestigious establishment, then it is important to have incredibly strong academic grades. Most academic institutions will expect applicants looking for a place on an undergraduate course to have a minimum of 3 A-levels or equivalent whereas those seeking to pursue a post-graduate course should already have a strong degree classification (ideally at 2:1 level).

Fortunately telecommunications is a course that can be studied at both post-graduate and under-graduate level. However, the length of your course will very much depend upon which level you are studying at. A degree programme will last a minimum of 3 years, although some establishments will extend the course for a further year to allow students to gain experience within a work environment. Post-graduate courses will last from a year, although may be extended for those wishing to study on a part-time basis.

If English is not your native language, then you will be required to sit an IETLS test and score a minimum of 6.0 – 6.5 before studying on any course programme.

Where to study?

There is such competition for places on telecommunications courses, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level that the decisions you make regarding your institution of study will have a significant impact upon your future. You should ensure that you attend a prestigious university that has developed strong working relationships with companies within the chemical engineering sector as this will increase your networking opportunities as well as your chances of finding employment post-graduation.

Of course with all of the information that you’re going to be receiving, it’s easy to forget about your emotional welfare. You should ultimately aim to choose somewhere that will provide you with social as well as academic fulfilment for the duration of your course - particularly if you’re opting to live away from home. Wherever you choose to study, your degree will end up costing you a lot of money, so you need to ensure that you get the most out of your time as a student. As such it is important that you consider whether the surrounding culture will add to the pleasure of your University years as well as academic benefits of studying at a particular institution.

One consideration to take into account is the cost of your course, as well as the grade requirements. Most Universities will only accept undergraduates with A’s at A-level or with 2.1 degrees for post-graduate qualification, so before deciding that this is the course for you, check that your grades meet these requirements. Given that a chemical engineering course can potentially consist of up to four years, budgeting is also vital. Can you afford the fees? Can you afford the living costs? Will you be able to get part-time work to sustain your studies or are you eligible for any grants and scholarships?
