How studying abroad could make you a stronger person

All these years, your life revolved around your friends and family, and now suddenly you have to leave everyone behind and embark on a new journey all alone. Even though the prospect of flying abroad is for your career, are you still worried or confused? Thinking how are you going to take care of yourself while studying abroad? How are you going to manage your finances? Who will take care of you when you fall sick? Who will be beside you when you feel homesick or depressed?

Well, studying abroad is one of those phases in your life that can make you a stronger person. It has happened with many people who were earlier worried and thought of quitting this dream opportunity.

So, how did they change their minds? They believed that if they follow the six golden steps (below), then going abroad for higher studies could bring good changes in their lives:

1. You expand your world – become bi- or multi-cultural

It’s true! The more different number of people you meet in this world, the clearer your outlook becomes and you become a bi- or multi-cultural person. But this doesn’t mean you have to be a sociable person and get along with everyone – you can still be an introvert (if you are one) and create your own world, amongst others.

Studying abroad brings you closer to people from other ethnic groups and helps you learn more about their histories and cultures (real-life examples), which you get to read about only in books perhaps.

2. You learn to cook and eat alone

Never treated yourself at a restaurant? Perhaps, now you have the chance to eat your dinner at a fancy resto all alone. Moreover, it’s not dull or boring to cook and eat, when no one else is around you, but a habit that makes you responsible, adaptable and independent in the long run.

3. You learn to manage your chores

Time to shake up your lazy bones! When you’re staying alone, you need to manage everything on your own – including minute chores – from washing clothes to doing dishes. You may have a roomie, but that doesn’t mean you can leave it on him/her to help you with everything every day. If you do not know how to manage your chores, at least learn and take it day by day.

4. You learn to keep your fears aside

Remember the London Bridge terror attack? There are many such examples of shooting and killing by some groups of people who think they can terrorise the world. Some people like to think these are all hate crimes.

However, it doesn’t stop anything. Does it? We keep moving on and continue with our work brushing aside all fears. So do you. You have to keep working for your career and focus until you get what you have planned all these years.

But if you think staying in your home country can solve all problems, then you’re wrong. Your sense of security lies in your own confidence and the ability to adapt under different circumstances.

5. You learn to prioritise

You might find yourself muddling with a lot of work. Try to organise and prioritise your tasks. If you have plans for a weekend getaway with your friends and have an assignment to complete by the following week, then which is more important for you?

6. You learn to save money

Sounds weird? Why would you save money? Because the habit of saving money will help you survive with a minimum amount of money in hand (which you will spend wisely). Besides, you never know when you face some medical emergencies (or other), for which you always need some savings.

All the above skills put together will make you a person who you are meant to be. So are you ready to face fresh challenges while studying abroad? If you’re, you should also tell yourself that no matter what hardships I face, I’ll give my best.  And by the end of your academic year abroad, you’ll find yourself being turned out into an entirely different person – a confident and strong individual.
