The wait is over!
As the year is on the verge of ending, we witnessed the grand declaration of the Nobel Prizes 2016.
The Nobel Prizes, named after the dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel, are awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Academy, the Karolinska Institutet and the Norwegian Nobel Committee to the outstanding contributions in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Physiology, Peace, Literature and Economic Sciences.

1. Physiology or Medicine – To the cell biologist!
Yoshinori Ohsumi, the Japanese biologist, for ‘the discovery of mechanisms for autophagy’ – a major breakthrough that could solve some enigmas prevailing in medicine and science – Now, that’s ground-breaking!
2. Physics – To the quantum men!
Michael Kosterlitz, Duncan Haldane, David J. Thouless− one half of the prize was awarded to David J. Thouless and the other half was jointly awarded to Michael Kosterlitz and Duncan Haldane for ‘theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter’− on quantum theory of matter.
The idea was explained by a member of the Nobel committee using a bun, a bagel and a pretzel.
3. Chemistry – To the machine-makers!
J. Fraser Stoddart, Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Ben Feringa for ‘the design and synthesis of molecular machines’. What a spectacular work!
4. Peace – A tribute to Colombia!
Juan Manuel Santos, the Colombian President, for ‘his efforts to bring the 50-year-long civil war in Colombo to an end’. The war has cost over 2,20,000 lives of Colombians and displaced nearly six million people.
5. Economic Sciences – Cheers MIT and Harvard!
Oliver Hart and Bengt R. Holmstrӧm ‘for their contributions to contract theory’ – the agreements that shape business, finance and public policy.
6. Literature – To all Dylan fans!
Robert Alan Zimmerman, aka Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel and a grand prize worth $927, 740 for ‘having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition’.
